MUSHROOM RESEARCH CENTRE (MRC)
The Mushroom Research Centre is a physical and virtual centre which brings together considerable existing capacity and resources within the University of Malaya. The centre brings researchers involved in fundamental and applied research related to mushroom. The center’s main aim is to enable researchers to better coordinate inter-disciplinary collaboration in the pursuit of sustainable research excellence. The immediate goal of the centre is to position University of Malaya in the forefront of research in mushroom biology and science through the consolidation of the recognized strength of the University in this niche area via sustainable exploitation of fungal biodiversity and agricultural resources as substrates for commercial mushroom industry. This will translate into a vibrant industry and create wealth for the nation.
The focus will be on harnessing natural resources and biodiversity for continued growth and sustainability of the mushroom industry. Mushrooms produce not only quality and nutritious fruiting bodies but a myriad of bioactive compounds for health, clean technology and bioremediation of degraded environment.
Together the internal members and external members both within and outside Malaysia we can become an excellent centre. The multidisciplinary research approach by experts from Faculties of Science and Medicine will enable to study mushrooms from cultivation to their value-added products for food, feed, health and environment.
